Hereford College of Arts is a specialist, public college offering a range of creative courses in art, design and media. It is the only college in the heart of the UK (The Midlands) dedicated to the arts. Our specialism gives a unique focus and quality to the life of the college – being one of only 4 public art colleges in the UK we are proud of our status and what we offer at a national and international level. We provide a diverse mix of courses including pre-degree level (Foundation Diploma in Art & Design), Degree courses (BA (Hons)) and at Masters level (MAs). International students participate in all these courses. If they have suitable prior qualifications and portfolio, some international students can complete a BA degree through a one-year ‘top-up’ programme.
History of Hereford College of Arts
The College was founded in 1851 in the same era as most of the other world renowned UK art schools such as the Royal College of Art. The UK was one of the first countries to develop a sophisticated art and design education system and is still the undoubted world leader in the field. Hereford College of Arts has continued to grow and diversify over its history, opening its doors to a wide range of students both nationally and internationally. Initially well known for its work of exceptional quality in teaching crafts the College now offers an established and contemporary programme of courses. It has approximately 400 BA (Hons) degree students and another 500 students studying at further education level (16-19 years old), including Foundation Diploma in Art & Design.
The College has two city centre campuses, within walking distance of each other. Both campuses have excellent workshop facilities including: ceramics, jewellery, printmaking, textiles and 3D workshops. They also have large open studios and seminar spaces, social spaces, libraries, photographic studios complete with lending stores full of photographic and media equipment, dark rooms, digital Mac and PC suites, together with a large format digital printing suites.
A creative community where students can build a successful career, with plenty of links with the professional world, work placements and opportunities to exhibit work to a wider audience. We keep our tutor groups small so we can ensure a greater level of personal attention and support. Most students have their own individual workspace and course sizes are kept small. This means that students quickly get to know everyone on their course and probably most other courses, as well as support staff throughout the college. We have very high levels of student satisfaction and highly professional and dedicated staff, within a safe and supportive environment. Teaching is by subject specialists who are all themselves making and exhibiting work, supported by expert technical instruction in the workshops.
City of Hereford
The location of Hereford is a fantastic source of inspiration for study; the city, night-life, the countryside, the river Wye, sports and people all offer the perfect destination in which to study – and it is a very safe place to live. The college has a very good range of student housing close-by to suit different budgets, including shared student housing and halls of residence. Heritage plays a big part of the local culture and it is famous all over the world for its castles, stately homes, black and white houses, Hereford cattle, and some of the most breath-taking countryside in England. This part of the UK has inspired artists for generations. The city is full of unusual shops, vintage outlets and student-friendly places. At the heart of the city is the superb 11th Century cathedral where we hold our Graduation event each year. The city has very good rail, road and bus links to the major cities in the UK including: London, Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham and Cardiff.
