Programme Synopsis
Information technology continues to be a major component of modern infrastructure.
The MUST MSc in IT aims to provide a system level understanding
of the breadth of topics that comprise IT and sufficient depth
in one or more of those topics to enable graduates to make significant
contributions. The programme also helps student develop competencies
in general system thinking and design as well as good understanding
of a chosen application domain of interest.
Biotechnology is likely to be one of the most important technologies
in the 21st century. It is now widely used in medical science,
pharmaceuticals, chemical processing, agriculture and many other
fields as well.
The MUST MSc in Biotechnology covers a wide area ranging from
molecular biology to large scale bio-processing. This helps to
give graduates a sound knowledge of the entire field.
- Transportation and Logistics
Modern urban communities are usually large and are unable to function
well without an effective and efficient transportation system.
Public transport, private vehicles, rail, air and marine transportation
need to be integrated into an effective and efficient system.
Similarly, efficient distribution of goods from manufacturers
to wholesalers and on to retailers is important to modern communities.
People who want to build a career in transportation and logistics
would be better prepared for their careers with a graduate degree
in the discipline.
The MUST MSc in Transportation and Logistics provides students
with exposure to the theoretical and analytical tools important
for the management and planning of transportation and logistics
systems.
- Construction Engineering and Management
The construction industry is an important industry in most countries
and qualified human resources to manage large construction projects
are in good demand.
The MUST MSc in Construction And Engineering Management exposes
students to the theoretical and analytical tools deemed important
for the management and planning of large construction projects.
- Materials Science and Engineering
New materials developed though research and improvements in processing
technologies have made it possible for the development of new
products. Natural materials like rubber and metal need materials
scientists to develop new forms and uses of these materials. Those
who want a career in the research and development of materials
are required to possess a good graduate degree to progress in
the field.
The MUST MSc in Materials Science and Engineering exposes students
to the theoretical foundations of the subject and teaches students
research skills, which will allow them to become researchers on
their own. The degree is also very useful for those who want to
be in management and production jobs in the materials sector.
The interrelationships of energy and environment are becoming
more important as the world becomes more developed. Problems such
as pollution, the need to find renewable energy sources are becoming
more critical.
The MUST MSc in Energy and Environment prepares students to focus
on the critical intersection between current and future energy
technologies and their impact on the environment.
This programme provides an understanding of the science and engineering
foundations behind energy conversion, delivery, and use, as well
as an understanding of the physical processes that govern the
transport and eventual fate of pollution in our environment. Students
also learn quantitative analytical tools which can greatly improve
policy and planning decisions involving energy and the environment.
Students will be provided with a strong theoretical background
for Energy and Environment related career in fields such as electricity,
oil and gas, chemical etc
- Systems Engineering and Management
Modern societies depend a great deal on large and complex production
and operation systems in a variety of industries, for example
factories, power generation stations, and petrochemical plants.
Systems engineering is the discipline which focuses on the study
of how to manage such large production systems. Those who wish
to build a career in this field will benefit from a relevant graduate
degree.
The MUST MSc in Systems Engineering and Management teaches students
the theoretical and analytical tools deemed important for the
understanding, management and planning of large engineering systems.
The thesis research allows students to demonstrate the ability
to apply the knowledge acquired.
General Requirements
All the above MUST Masters of Science programmes degrees require
both coursework and research. The coursework consists of nine courses
comprising of core courses, compulsory and elective programme courses
and elective non-programme courses. A thesis based on a research
into a relevant topic is also required.
Students are required to enroll in a two-month Preparatory Programme
(Fundamental courses) and achieve satisfactory results. The preparatory
programme is conducted in July and August before the start of
the MSc programme proper. In this programme, students’ skills
in mathematics, computer usage and other core subjects are strengthened.
Admission Requirements
- A First or Second Upper class Honours Bachelor Degree (equivalent
to CGPA 3.0 or better) in a relevant field.
- Applicants with a slightly lower qualification than the above
but with at least 3 years relevant working experience will also
be considered
- Proficiency in the English language
Duration
The MUST Master programmes require a minimum of three semesters
of full time study (equivalent to a minimum of 18 months). Most
students need four semesters (equivalent to 2 years) of full time
study.
Tuition fee
RM 60,000 for the 3 semester (equivalent to USD 16K)
Application fee for international student is USD 30
Intake: Once a year (starting in July of each year.
English proficiency requirements for international students
TOEFL score of 600 or IELST overall score of 6.5
Facilities
MUST provides excellent facilities to its students and staff.
Among the facilities available are:
Well-equipped classrooms with audio visual aids, including LCD
projectors and laptop computers.
The MUST campus is fully networked using the latest network technology
to provide high-bandwidth links for data transfer and video streaming
within the campus. It is connected to the Internet with a 2 megabits
per second (Mbps) leased line giving high-speed access to the
Internet for students and staff at anytime.
-Computers
The university is equipped with latest computers for students'
general use. High-end workstations and computers installed with
additional specialized software are installed in the IT laboratory,
the Transportation and Logistics laboratory, the Biotechnology
laboratories, and the Materials Science laboratory.
- Wireless network
A wireless network serves the library and the adjacent areas.
This allows students to connect to the network without having
to be restricted to locations where hardwired connections are
available. They can use the university's laptops or their own
laptops anywhere which is convenient in the areas serviced by
the wireless network.
- Video Conferencing
Video conferencing with high quality videos and sound are available
to facilitate communication between MUST and other external institutions
or organizations. The equipment has been used on a regular basis
for academic and research collaboration between MUST and MIT.
MUST has currently fully-equipped laboratories for all of its
programmes, i.e. Biotechnology, Information Technology, Transportation
and Logistics, Materials Science, and Construction engineering
and Management. In particular, the Biotechnology Faculty has four
labs such as Genomics, Molecular biology, Plant biotechnology
and Proteomics
Printed, digitized magazine and journals and books relevant to
the programmes at MUST are available in the library.
The Library is also equipped with computer workstations equipped
with high performance Internet connection and wireless network
facility for individual study and project work. More importantly
the online learning resources are accessible from anywhere at
any time.
The Library is operated using an integrated computerized library
management system that allows students to not only search and
locate materials in physical format but also view some of these
on their computers. Users would be able to also access certain
other libraries throughout the world through the MUST Library
homepage at http://library.must.edu.my.
