  • Energy and Environment (KP/JPS(KA5094)10/09)

Programme Synopsis

  • Information Technology

Information technology continues to be a major component of modern infrastructure.

The MUST MSc in IT aims to provide a system level understanding of the breadth of topics that comprise IT and sufficient depth in one or more of those topics to enable graduates to make significant contributions. The programme also helps student develop competencies in general system thinking and design as well as good understanding of a chosen application domain of interest.

  • Biotechnology

Biotechnology is likely to be one of the most important technologies in the 21st century. It is now widely used in medical science, pharmaceuticals, chemical processing, agriculture and many other fields as well.

The MUST MSc in Biotechnology covers a wide area ranging from molecular biology to large scale bio-processing. This helps to give graduates a sound knowledge of the entire field.

  • Transportation and Logistics

Modern urban communities are usually large and are unable to function well without an effective and efficient transportation system. Public transport, private vehicles, rail, air and marine transportation need to be integrated into an effective and efficient system. Similarly, efficient distribution of goods from manufacturers to wholesalers and on to retailers is important to modern communities. People who want to build a career in transportation and logistics would be better prepared for their careers with a graduate degree in the discipline.

The MUST MSc in Transportation and Logistics provides students with exposure to the theoretical and analytical tools important for the management and planning of transportation and logistics systems.

  • Construction Engineering and Management

The construction industry is an important industry in most countries and qualified human resources to manage large construction projects are in good demand.

The MUST MSc in Construction And Engineering Management exposes students to the theoretical and analytical tools deemed important for the management and planning of large construction projects.

  • Materials Science and Engineering

New materials developed though research and improvements in processing technologies have made it possible for the development of new products. Natural materials like rubber and metal need materials scientists to develop new forms and uses of these materials. Those who want a career in the research and development of materials are required to possess a good graduate degree to progress in the field.

The MUST MSc in Materials Science and Engineering exposes students to the theoretical foundations of the subject and teaches students research skills, which will allow them to become researchers on their own. The degree is also very useful for those who want to be in management and production jobs in the materials sector.

  • Energy and Environment

The interrelationships of energy and environment are becoming more important as the world becomes more developed. Problems such as pollution, the need to find renewable energy sources are becoming more critical.

The MUST MSc in Energy and Environment prepares students to focus on the critical intersection between current and future energy technologies and their impact on the environment.

This programme provides an understanding of the science and engineering foundations behind energy conversion, delivery, and use, as well as an understanding of the physical processes that govern the transport and eventual fate of pollution in our environment. Students also learn quantitative analytical tools which can greatly improve policy and planning decisions involving energy and the environment. Students will be provided with a strong theoretical background for Energy and Environment related career in fields such as electricity, oil and gas, chemical etc

  • Systems Engineering and Management

Modern societies depend a great deal on large and complex production and operation systems in a variety of industries, for example factories, power generation stations, and petrochemical plants. Systems engineering is the discipline which focuses on the study of how to manage such large production systems. Those who wish to build a career in this field will benefit from a relevant graduate degree.

The MUST MSc in Systems Engineering and Management teaches students the theoretical and analytical tools deemed important for the understanding, management and planning of large engineering systems. The thesis research allows students to demonstrate the ability to apply the knowledge acquired.

General Requirements

All the above MUST Masters of Science programmes degrees require both coursework and research. The coursework consists of nine courses comprising of core courses, compulsory and elective programme courses and elective non-programme courses. A thesis based on a research into a relevant topic is also required.

Students are required to enroll in a two-month Preparatory Programme (Fundamental courses) and achieve satisfactory results. The preparatory programme is conducted in July and August before the start of the MSc programme proper. In this programme, students’ skills in mathematics, computer usage and other core subjects are strengthened.

Admission Requirements

  1. A First or Second Upper class Honours Bachelor Degree (equivalent to CGPA 3.0 or better) in a relevant field.
  2. Applicants with a slightly lower qualification than the above but with at least 3 years relevant working experience will also be considered
