Leeds Metropolitan University Logo

At Leeds Metropolitan University, we have a long tradition of welcoming international students from all over the world. If you choose to come and study here with us, you will find a caring community of staff who are dedicated to making your time both rewarding and enjoyable.

The University, which has over 41,000 students including 3,500 international students, offers a wide range of courses and levels with both September and January start dates. English language courses start throughout the year.

Leeds Met Building

Leeds is a friendly, cosmopolitan city which has excellent transport links, both nationally and internationally. By train, London and Edinburgh are just over two hours away and there are flights from Leeds Bradford Airport to many international destinations.

The city has something to offer everyone, a vibrant nightlife, cultural attractions, top quality sport and an unrivalled array of shops. There is a vast range of restaurants offering cuisine including Japanese, Thai, Mexican, Indian, Greek, French, Italian and Spanish.

There is a wide range of accommodation in Leeds, both on and off campus. The University’s modern student residences are some of the best in the UK and usually comprise single bedrooms in self-catering flats with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities although some are en-suite. Situated close to the scenic Headingley Campus, Mary Morris International Residence offers self-catering accommodation to international students only. Private rented accommodation is available through UNIPOL Student Homes, a housing agency which is supported by both universities in Leeds and their Students’ Unions.

Quality

We deliver high quality education and our degrees are internationally recognised. In recent reviews, the University has received glowing reports and excellent results from the Quality Assurance Agency, the independent body which monitors standards in universities and colleges. This included getting 24 out of 24 for our Business, Management and Economics courses, 23 out of 24 for Childhood Studies and Subjects Allied to Medicine, and 22 out of 24 for Hospitality, Leisure, Recreation, Sport and Tourism.

Facilities

We offer fully integrated library, computing and media facilities to support your learning. The University has some of the best sports complexes in British higher education. Our sports facilities include large sports halls, squash courts, indoor swimming pool, athletics track, tennis courts, gymnastics, dance studio and fitness rooms. There are large, modern refectories, shops, bookshops and cash machines (ATMs) on campus.

Student life

The University has two International Student Advisers who assist with immigration matters and visa extensions, and are on hand to offer advice on all matters affecting international students.

A welcome programme is available to all new students which is a good opportunity to meet new friends and find out about the facilities.

The University has several chaplains who offer pastoral care and support to those of any faith.

The Students’ Union runs many clubs and societies. All students can join the Union free of charge and are then entitled to discounts in many shops and leisure facilities, both locally and throughout the UK.

International students can work up to 20 hours per week and longer during the holidays. The University’s Job Shop student employment service can help you find temporary work.

Student profiles

Cleona Lira, from Goa in India, is studying for a general MBA.

She said: “From what I read on the Leeds Met website, I knew I could combine my MBA degree with a lot of reading, dancing classes from the sports facility and also make many international friends. I do go out to clubs with my housemates quite often as the night life in Leeds is very vibrant and ‘happening’.

Eng Chai, from Malaysia, is studying Electronics and Electrical Engineering for a Bachelors degree at Leeds Met.

He said: “Leeds Met is providing me with applicable, marketable skills and knowledge. As we students will be facing the real world very soon in our career, these are essential to us. Also, the course fee is reasonable compared to other chartered universities. And, Leeds is a big city, with lots of opportunities, whether to buy daily food, study materials or even to find a job – all are within easy reach.”
